This post is dedicated to all my readers who have Google AdSense on their websites … blogs or "traditional" websites … and all those who may be considering the idea.

Recently, Google changed their terms of service for AdSense Publishers … that’s what you are if you display Google AdSense. They made specific changes in their requirements for Privacy Policies for all publishers and they put "teeth" in to the rule. In the past these policies were suggested … and lack of them might affect a site’s quality score, but the rules could essentially be ignored. Now Google have promised to stop serving publishers who don’t comply. Many of the major blogs have been ignoring this, Darren (of course), took note and wrote it up here.

This is both easy and difficult to comply with one a one or two site publisher … if you have dozens or hundreds of sites this will be a big thing to get done.

As usual the blogging community is very giving. My colleague Eric Giguere has already released a dedicated AdSense Privacy Policy plug-in that automates this task and will put you in compliance quick as a wink.

I have already uploaded and used the plug-in on several sites and it works great. Thanks Eric … and for you who don’t know what the privacy policy on all your sites are? Better check now.

BTW, I’ve been an AdSense publisher since mid-2005, and it works for me … but some techniques and programs work even better … if you want to make bigger money, here’s a way I recommend: It costs money, but then again, by our age most of us know there is no free lunch. But the money is trivial, and it is 100% backed up … you can order this system, use it for 60 days (more than enough time to make money if you ever are going to … and then get a prompt, courteous refund if you decide it is not for you.

You have as much as you want to gain, and absolutely zero to lose if you feel this offer is not your cup of tea … so what are you waiting for? I can personally guarantee that if you do nothing, you will get absolutely no where. Try “doing something” and see if this is “it”.

Today is a day to remember the fallen of 9/11, the other needless hundreds of thousand dead or wounded since then because of the massive ignorance and arrogance of one little man, and the horrible excuse for democracy and civilized debate being demonstrated over the health care issue in the US.

But it’s my birthday and I refuse to write/discuss those saddening issues any further … the rest of you can squabble amongst yourselves.

Last night just before bed I was kind of surprised and more than a little saddened by a report from a relative in the US about tent cities springing up to house mainly victims of home foreclosures. In the USA. Tent cities are the best we can do? I don’t even want to comment any more.

Because it is my birthday, perhaps, CNN knew I needed something uplifting … and boy this did perk me up, especially the online connection:

By Ted Rowlands CNN

(CNN) — It may have a fairy tale ending — a story of perseverance and second chances that’s playing out live on the public stage of online networking.

But 24-year-old Brianna Karp’s story started as a nightmare.

In a rocky economy, Karp was laid off from her Irvine, California, job as an executive assistant in July 2008.

She got by for a while on temp jobs and unemployment benefits. But when her savings dried up, she was no longer able to afford her rent.

The only answer she saw then was a trailer she’d inherited from her father — a man she barely knew who had recently committed suicide.

"I was left with a truck and this camper, which I was going to sell but coincidentally this happened to me," she said. "I thought, ‘Well, I have this.’ "

Karp, who writes that she is also estranged from her mother, ended up camped in a Los Angeles-area Walmart parking lot.

"The first night, I think, in the Walmart parking lot was the scariest," she told CNN. "I was panicking, and I was just afraid."

For comfort, she had her mastiff named Fezzik. And she had her laptop computer.

As she spent five months looking for jobs and blasting out resumes, often spending hour after hour at a coffee shop to take advantage of its free Wi-Fi connection, she also started blogging. The result, the Girl’s Guide to Homelessness, chronicled the ups and downs of her new life. …

"I was trying to stay positive and cheerful," Karp said. "I started writing the blog in a tongue-in-cheek way to kind of laugh about my circumstances, keep them chronicled. I didn’t think anyone would actually read it …… Not that all of her troubles were instantly over. … She’s also still seeking that elusive full-time job, while hoping her newfound high profile will help spread the word about homelessness, and how it can happen to the most unlikely people.

"If you saw me walking down the street, you wouldn’t assume I live in a parking lot," she writes on the blog. "In short, I am just like you, except without the convenience of a permanent address."

At the risk of sounding trite, or acting like an old geezer (which I am) trying to sound hip with last century’s slang, “You go, girl”. Hat’s off to Brianna. (and if you (or anyone else reading this) get tired of being passed around from one beggar’s spot to another, you can always do as I did and move to the Philippines for a better, much cheaper life.)

And to the rest of you … especially those who work up with a long face … find what makes you happy and shelve the worry and depression about the things you can’t change anyway. I’m writing this with a smile on my face listening to the sounds of my lovely wife and nieces outside the window of Blog Central, preparing a ton of food for tomorrow’s birthday celebration which I like to share with my two little nephews. Mazen, the oldest, was born the day after I was, so when you take the International Dateline into account, we basically share the same birthday.

My blogging colleague Lynn Terry had some interesting comments today on a recent Yahoo Small Business article predicting small business failures. I liked her comments and have a couple more to add, and I’d like to thank her for wading through the Yahoo articles, becuase frankly, for an on line based business I find Yahoo clueless and negative … much more so than many more conventional “dirt based” publishers. Strange.

7 Small Business Ideas Most Likely To Fail

… The article states that “many people do a lousy job of picking businesses they can realistically turn into a profitable operation.”

The co-authors go on to say that most aspiring entrepreneurs consider small business ideas that are cheap or easy to set up, or start a business based on a love for the product or service – instead of basing their decision on true profit potential…

Here is the quick list of the 7 small business ideas they consider “overrated”:

Restaurants

Direct Sales

Online Retail

High End Retail

Independent Consulting

Franchise Ownership

Traffic-Driven Web Sites

I’ve highlighted the 3 business models that are “work at home” options, but we could easily add Independent Consulting as a 4th model that can be done from a home office and/or as an online operation. …

Direct Sales – I agree with the authors that it is the Top % that performs well in direct sales. To some extent the model itself supports this, because as the company grows the top tier stands to profit most. However, the closing statement on this model didn’t sit well with me:

The result, Yancey says: “Most of them wind up with a bunch of jewelry or kitchen equipment sitting in their basement that they can’t sell.”

That they can’t sell… or that they don’t sell? …

I have to say Lynn has hit the mark with laser-like accuracy there. There is plenty, and I mean plenty of scope to make money in direct sales, but tou can’t do it by trying to sell third-rate crapolla and better than first-rate prices. That’s a recipe for disaster in any economic climate.

A good friend I used to work with decided he was going to retire early and fund the short fall in his necessary retirement income with a direct sales website. I thought iut a little strange, as he was thinking of marketing clothes, retail, and had no expereince at all in that field, but heck, anyone can make a go of nearly anything if they work at it.

Problem is, my friend didn’t work at it. He signed up to some sort of ‘online mall’ membership deal and set ip a “free” website selling ultra-cheap looking immigration leather jackets and other schlock from China in competition with several other online mall members. You don’t need Dominic Dunn to tel you the effort ended badly. But that is not a failure of the business model (strategic), it’s a failure of how my friend chose to implement the model (tactical).

Read the rest of Lynn’s article, I think she makes some very good points, I’ll try to squeeze in a few more first-hand expereince comments later.

I was chatting on the phone this morning with a nice lady who wanted some information on how my life was going here in the Philippines where I make my home. I’m US bred and born for those who don’t know me, but I moved here to the Philippines some time back as life here suits me much better than it did in the good old US 0f A. (I write often about seniors and retirees living overseas here on my PhilFAQS blog).

The conversation was going nicely when one statement came up and just stuck me the same way I would feel if I were sitting in a quiet room and someone clanged a huge Chinese gong right behind my head. The lady was talking about some possible business prospects and the statement went something like this …”after all, if we are talking to retirees, their absolute number one concern is health insurance.”

No some of you are already retirees, as I am, and many of you, I will guess, want to live long enough to become retirees, so let me ask you … is “health insurance” your number one concern?

I mean seriously, when she said that to me I had to physically hold myself back from laughing or making some sort of wise ass comment. That would have been rude, and I am sure it would have mystified the lady I was talking to, because the way she said it left no doubt that it was very high up in her mind (she’s not yet at retirement age by the way’) and she clearly feels that is a number one concern of most, if not all retirees.

So why did I have to hold back a laugh and take pains to try not to say something insulting? Because, quite honestly, health insurance is way, way, way far down the list of my most pressing concerns.

Now I am fortunate … I have health insurance. So I realize that the subject is going to be higher on the “worry list” of those who don’t have health insurance than on mine … that’s only natural … but if anyone else cares to chime in … do you really feel it is top of your list?

Especially with the current pitched political battle going on in the US … distorted way away from the issues of health care, by the way … and funded behind the curtain by the huge, rich, powerful (and in my opinion) crooked US health insurance mega-industry … I realize it may be hard to get a clear and unbiased view on this, but health insurance is hardly the number one thing on my mind.

Each of us is born with a finite allowance of days. We get what we get. We can’t buy more. We can’t change those days by going to Harvard and getting a PhD. We can’t get more by going to church or by paryting, giving money to the poor or opening a girly bar and selling beer at half price. We have what we have. That’s the number one issue on my mind … what do I do to maximize the time I have left.

Long time reader Tom Glenn sent me an email the other day with a story attached that really got me thinking. I was really busy with a couple items I had mapped out as “must dos” on that day, but after I read the story Tom shared I just packed up my wife, drove past my in-laws house and picked up our two precious nephews, bundled everyone in the car and drove to Mr. Henry Cy’s closest branch office of nirvana … otherwise known as SM … using my new eyes along the way … my “first solo” since surgery … and spent a long time riding carousel’s, driving electronic game race cars and trying to drop little balls through hoops to win absolutely useless prizes for Sami, the three year old, who loved every “wasted”minute.

I didn’t windup getting anything done on my to do list that day, but you know something? I think I spend my time one heck of a lot more wisely, I know the bys and I both had more fun … and I didn’t think about “health insurance” or “government health care” for one minute.

The older I get, the more I enjoy Saturday morning. Perhaps it’s the quiet solitude that comes with being the first to rise, or maybe it’s the unbounded joy of not having to be at work. Either way, the first few hours of a Saturday morning are most enjoyable.

A few weeks ago, I was shuffling toward the garage with a steaming cup of coffee in one hand and the morning paper in the other. What began as a typical Saturday morning turned into one of those lessons that life seems to hand you from time to time. Let me tell you about it:

I turned the dial up into the phone portion of the band on my ham radio in order to listen to a Saturday morning swap net. Along the way, I came across an older sounding chap, with a tremendous signal and a golden voice. You know the kind; he sounded like he should be in the broadcasting business. He was telling whomever he was talking with something about “a thousand marbles.” I was intrigued and stopped to listen to what he had to say.

“Well, Tom, it sure sounds like you’re busy with your job. I’m sure they pay you well but it’s a shame you have to be away from home and your family so much. Hard to believe a young fellow should have to work sixty or seventy hours a week to make ends meet. It’s too bad you missed your daughter’s dance recital,” he continued; “Let me tell you something that has helped me keep my own priorities.” And that’s when he began to explain his theory of a “thousand marbles.”

“You see, I sat down one day and did a little arithmetic. The average person lives about seventy-five years. I know, some live more and some live less, but on average, folks live about seventy-five years.

Now then, I multiplied 75 times 52 and I came up with 3,900, which is the number of Saturdays that the average person has in their entire lifetime. Now, stick with me, Tom, I’m getting to the important part.

It took me until I was fifty-five years old to think about all this in any detail,” he went on, “and by that time I had lived through over twenty-eight hundred Saturdays. I got to thinking that if I lived to be seventy-five, I only had about a thousand of them left to enjoy. So I went to a toy store and bought every single marble they had. I ended up having to visit three toy stores to round up 1,000 marbles. I took them home and put them inside a large, clear plastic container right here in the shack next to my gear.

Every Saturday since then, I have taken one marble out and thrown it away. I found that by watching the marbles diminish, I focused more on the really important things in life.

There’s nothing like watching your time here on this earth run out to help get your priorities straight.

Now let me tell you one last thing before I sign off with you and take my lovely wife out for breakfast. This morning, I took the very last marble out of the container. I figure that if I make it until next Saturday then I have been given a little extra time. And the one thing we can all use is a little more time.

It was nice to meet you Tom. I hope you spend more time with your family, and I hope to meet you again here on the band. This is a 75 year old man, K9NZQ, clear and going QRT, good morning!”

You could have heard a pin drop on the band when this fellow signed off. I guess he gave us all a lot to think about. I had planned to work on the antenna that morning, and then I was going to meet up with a few hams to work on the next club newsletter.

Instead, I went upstairs and woke my wife up with a kiss. “C’mon honey, I’m taking you and the kids to breakfast.”
“What brought this on?” she asked with a smile.

“Oh, nothing special, it’s just been a long time since we spent a Saturday together with the kids. And hey, can we stop at a toy store while we’re out? I need to buy some marbles.”

So what about it? Anyone think that buying marbles is a good idea? Is the best things in life actually losing your marbles? And is ‘health insurance’ really, really, really as important as the TV bobble heads want you to think it is?

As a project manager for web design projects over the years, I have gone through the process of bringing many sites from the initiation phase to launch. Through working with these many projects I have learned many different best practices and things to remember for future projects. Specifically, some of the best practices that I would like to share with you include tips for working with web designers, working with coders, and communicating with your client.

Working with designers can be fun and challenging. I am not an artistic person; I merely know when I see something I like. The designers I work with are very talented and do great work. The tips that I can recommend for working with designers include managing expectations and being very specific about what the client likes and does not like. The first thing I ask the client for is a list of sites that they like and why. The second thing I ask for is a list of a few sites that they don?t like and why. I immediately provide these to the designer so that he or she can get a feel for the clients taste.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that designers will sometimes render something in their design that cannot be done with code. It is important as you move along to always question what they?ve designed can be coded properly. The last that you want is to have a beautiful design that the client loves and then to learn that a critical piece cannot be coded. You will get a feel for this after you do many projects, but in the beginning it would be smart to always check with your developer if you are unsure of something.

When working with developers it is important to be very organized, descriptive, and clear in exactly what you?re requirements are for the project. If it is a small project you may not need a requirements traceability matrix, but you will definitely need this document on larger projects. This ensures that the requirements for the coding of the project are well documented and that the developer can check them off as he is developing. Communications is critical in ensuring that the project is developed properly.

Possibly the hardest part of launching a web site is dealing with the client. Some clients are very low maintenance while other clients are very hands on and know exactly what they want and force you into a box. It is your job to work with the client and gain trust from them that you know how to do a good job. Constant communication throughout the process is key in gaining and keeping the trust. You want the client to always be informed and to see progress happening so that they know their project is moving along and on schedule.

As you continue to launch web sites as a project manager of web development you obviously learn many little tips, tricks, and techniques for improving and refining your process for next time. I?ve had a blast launching web sites, everything from blogs to ecommerce sites and corporate web sites. If web design is something you?re interested, you should certainly review your options for being a project management in this field because there are many opportunities to grow.

If you are ready to build a website and a bit confused as to the perfect format which should be chosen for the site considering there are so may variants, then WordPress could be the right choice for you. It is highly probable that you have heard about it as a popular blogging platform, but there are some amazing things for which you could use it. One can use WordPress to create a website or CMS (Content Management System), which has several intrinsic advantages:

Having fantastico in the domain control panel would add to the convenience of setting up WordPress and it is just a matter of a few clicks and your website is ready and functional. Even if there is no fantastico, setting up can be done manually and it is a simple process where you just have to follow instructions. If you are not at ease with any of the options, then delegate the job to someone else. It would not take any time if the person handling it is experienced, and the charges are also not too high.

Upgrading an conventional website built by some one else can be pricey as you have to pay the designer and then wait till he gets back and then wait again till the job is through. Using a system like WordPress is much more user-friendly and easier to learn. You can be updating your own site in no time and changes are instant – you don’t have to wait for a designer to have time to do the edits for you!

One more advantage of using WordPress is that outsourcing website updates and changes can be done very conveniently. Just set up a virtual assistant and allocate a username and password which she uses to log on and work on your site. You can cease to feel stressed whether your latest version of the site is up on the net or whether you are overwriting work completed by some other person.

The Categories and Archives section of WordPress is a built-in feature which adds to the convenience of use. Sites which are regularly upgraded are favorites of search engines. Because of the nature of blogs and WordPress you’ll likely be updating very frequently and this is good news for your search engine rankings. You site picks up as soon as the blog search engines start to hook you.

When you use WordPress to build a site, you are automatically entitled to RSS Feed subscription. Every time you add new content to your site, your visitors get to know as they can subscribe to your RSS feed. This is a wonderful way to keep your site ‘ticking’ with growing number of people coming to know more. This should enlighten you on the use of WordPress to construct a successful and easy website which not only draws traffic but also lets you live peacefully.

Every now an then I come across an article that is just too good not to bring to your notice. Someone who says what i am saying, but says it so well it bears repeating. Hats off to Mary Beth Franklin and Bob Frick of www.Kiplinger.com who published an article on retirement, empowering retirement and how seniors and retirees can cope with today’s needs to make that retirement much more meaningful and comfortable in today’s world. here are some quotes from their excellent article from KTNV.com

Baby-boomers asked to define R&R are more likely to say "rock ‘n’ roll" than "rest and relaxation." That’s a good thing, given that the old-fashioned definition of retirement as 25 years of leisure is built on two misconceptions, says gerontologist and author Ken Dychtwald.

The first, says Dychtwald, is the notion that "if you remove work from the lives of productive, intelligent and active individuals, they will still be happy." On the contrary, says Dychtwald, "for many, retirement becomes a time of boredom and isolation."

The second misconception is one of entitlement: the expectation that the working population will be able to subsidize 78 million baby-boomers, the first wave of whom turned 62 last year…

So how do you prepare for a successful and exciting semi-retirement, an encore career or even a series of careers? The trick, says Dychtwald, is having "a vision and dream for the life you want to live, and the capacity to fund it."…

Plan Your Transition

There are many reasons why working until 65 and clocking out is no longer the definitive retirement model. But the main reason is that many retirees need to work, and the economy demands it, too.

Longevity should be viewed as a gift, says Marc Freedman, founder of Civic Ventures, a think tank that helps "older adults with a passion for service." The U.S. will need experienced seniors as it grapples with social needs and faces labor shortages in such critical areas as education and health care, says Freedman.

And boomers need to rethink why they’re saving for retirement. "People often think it’s impossible to save for a retirement that could last 30 years beyond their last paycheck," says Freedman. "But it’s liberating if you’re not saving for the freedom from work. Instead, you’re saving for the freedom to work at something close to your heart." Having both savings and income from a job that’s fulfilling, even if it’s less lucrative than your previous career, will enable you to continue to live the life you want, Freedman says.

… Boomers should think about dialing down the pace while they’re still working, says Smith. That means taking time off — perhaps using a leave of absence or sabbatical — to reflect on the next stage of their lives. That way, says Smith, you avoid waking up one morning and saying, Whoops, it’s time for me to go.

A transition serves a practical purpose as well. Given the large number of boomers who will be competing for positions, having a plan in place is a smart move. In 2016, the U.S. will have 47% more workers who are 55 and older than in 2006, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s more than five times the projected growth rate for the overall workforce.

Your plan may be based on skills learned from a previous career but focused in a more satisfying way. Gary Maxworthy of Mill Valley, Cal., is one of Freedman’s favorite examples of someone who drew on experience to make a difference in his community, and whose modest salary helps make his retirement years more comfortable.

After his wife died of breast cancer in 1993, Maxworthy, then 56, joined Volunteers in Service to America (Vista), an organization that combats poverty in the U.S. The former food-industry executive earned a stipend of $7,000 working for the San Francisco Food Bank. When his year with Vista was up, he stayed on with the food bank and created Farm to Family, a network that distributes fresh produce to food banks throughout California. This year, the organization expects to distribute 60 million pounds of fruits and vegetables to 40 food banks throughout the state. …

For many boomers, midlife is a time to explore completely new options. Donna Morris and Bill Sweat spent more than 20 years — most of their married life — working in the financial-services industry, she in marketing and he in operations. About ten years ago, the couple started thinking about what kind of business they could run together when they left the corporate world. "We wanted to do something with a tangible product that you could touch, hold and feel, and wine was something we were both passionate about," says Morris, 48.

So in September 2005, the couple took a "vocation vacation," working for three days at Stone Wolf Vineyards, in the Eola Hills region of Oregon. For a fee, usually ranging from $500 to $1,300 per person, VocationVacations will let you test-drive your dream job. The company provides a mentor and hands-on experience in professions ranging from alpaca rancher to baseball announcer, and from caterer to jewelry designer. …

Morris’s advice to would-be career changers: Do your research, experience the job you think you’d like to do, and have a solid financial plan.

Do a Dry Run

They were able to apply their management and marketing expertise to the property by starting a first-rate Web site (www.cedarsofwilliamsburg.com), installing wireless Internet access and building gazebos on the picture-perfect property. Their inn, which has a staff of seven, entertains 4,500 guests a year and turns a profit.

Bob and Grace, 55, have already begun thinking about their next act. One idea is to franchise their B&B model for would-be innkeepers who don’t have a business background. …

Cultivate Your Network

<let p career.... ?S>

Kane is a career changer himself. After 27 years producing TV commercials, he now teaches older professionals who earn salaries of $75,000 to $300,000 how to market themselves. For a one-time fee of $95, you can receive job leads via e-mail. Or for about $7,000, you can sign up for a lifetime career-coaching service that includes résumé writing and networking opportunities. The price tag may seem steep, but Kane notes that it is less than one month’s salary for an out-of-work executive accustomed to earning $100,000 or more a year.

Kane says a typical Gray Hair Management client is a professional who has always had a job and has been out of work longer than he or she expected. "Whatever he or she is doing is not working," Kane says. "A résumé can’t get you a job. It can only get you an interview." And 80% of jobs — even second ones — come from networking.

Gerontologist Dychtwald, who’s 57, says boomers may have to work all the angles to find the right job, but they’re uniquely adapted to deal with change. "We’re the most educated generation in the history of the world. Twenty percent of us have changed religions, and 50% have changed spouses. We have a huge appetite for change and reinvention."

Again, there is a lot of good advice and info in the article on how to make your retirement more rewarding and even how to be able to retire when you think you can’t. Worth a look, and in fact a careful read. Come back often and I’ll try to keep you heading in a new and hopeful direction … remember I’m both a senior and a retiree and I find, more and more each year, that it’s not only possible, it’s fun. If you’re in you late 50′s or early 60′s and you’re worried your job will disappear … or if it already has, take heart … you don’t need it, and you may well be better off without it .. life is about living, not being someone’s wage slave.

It isn’t about technology. It’s about interactions between people who just happen to be bloggers. Not between search engines or social networking sites or any of those other high tech things you read and puzzle about.

It’s nice to be noticed by fellow bloggers. here’s a very well put together list from a blog I never even knew about (and am already now a subscriber to) ….
Have you discovered yet how WordPress can make having your own blog spot simple and fun? WordPress the the most popular CMS, Content Management System, on the internet today, incorporating web page creation and blogging into an intuitive interface that is easy to install and get straight to work.

One very useful plugin for WordPress is called the "SEO All-in-One Pack." This module allows you to enter the search engine optimization data for each blog, which is then used by search engine spiders to help increase the exposure the post gets on the internet. For anyone who has a message to get out to the world, this module is an excellent addition.

Another useful addition to your WordPress site is a plugin called "Bookmarkify" which allows readers to easily bookmark the post for popular social media networks, such as del icious, and StumbleUpon, among others. This can be an excellent way to get your blog to go viral, or at least attract large numbers of people who are interested in what your blog site has to say.

Or how about adding a tag cloud to your blog spot? Using such a keyword oriented method makes it easier for your site visitors to find related information, which goes a long way towards keeping them on your site longer, and doing more. It only takes a few minutes to install, and becomes instantly useful when the installation is complete.

It can be a tremendous time saving tool to be able to swap between normal viewing of the WordPress site, and having access to the admin tools. Installing the Admin Meta Links is just the way to accomplish that. It allows people who have post and edit rights on your WordPress site to easily switch between modes, making changes and then viewing them just as normal users would see them.

A site that is dedicated to helping people understand the many plugins available for WordPress is a wonderful idea. Get insider views of the latest utilities available for your blog spot, and find out how to make complicated tasks easier than you had ever imagined.

WordPress has revolutionized the way people create and maintain a website, making it easier for bloggers to blog, and for webmasters to set up exciting new web pages. In addition to the beauty of WordPress itself is the large community of plugin designer who develop the tools they most want to have available.

But don’t take my word for it. Visit this website that specializes in reviews of WordPress plugins, and you’ll quickly understand how important these small utilities can be. They make running your WordPress site easier than it has ever been, and provide you with greater control over the things that matter most to you.
