OPAD Contest — Day 3 — Are Contests and Ranking Worth It?

There’s a question I wouldn’t mind having some comments and guidance on, for sure.

Several months back, when Mark first started the 35m5.com Top 100 Money Making list I joined up … IIRC I was in spot 156 pr so and from there dropped steadily down to the mid-190’s where I languished for several weeks.

Now, after a week where I fixed some issues with my subscription feeds, actively went out and asked people to subscribe, tripled my RSS subscriptions overnight, etc,, I am now in my first week in the dreaded ‘wrong side of 200′ zone. Almost feel as if I should have just ignored the whole thing … I certainly haven’t lacked for non-on-line things to do lately.

I don’t know.  I only joined for fun and I only expected t0o perhaps sort of hold my own … because I am not a big moneymaker (never will be, I don’t work at it enough) and I don’t really live, eat, breath the making money niche as some do.

I have been making money online for years though … and I thought it would be fun to offer some insights from someone on the plus side of 60 … since this whole Internet thing is often looked at as only a young person’s game.

My thoughts right now?  I think I will pull the little widget for the top 100 ranking off the blog … it’s pretty clear I am not competitive with the criteria Mark uses.

Thought two is, I’m not going to stop writing at all … I resolve to do more writing this month, but I think I should write a lot more about the original subjects I thought I could ‘repurpose’ this blog from … retirement issues, and especially federal retirements and divorce, a specialized subject not even most attorney’s are well qualified on.

Third thought?  More content and more exposure.  I’ve had some welcome traffic from 45n5.com and I certainly will not stop being a reader there.

I’m doing more writing this moth through efforts like this OPAD (One Post A Day) contest Eric Giguere is sponsoring … in fact this is my day three entry there.

But I guess the operative question is, should I keep the little 45n5 chicklet and just accept the fact I suck or take it off the site and pretend I don’t care?

Hi RP - Don’t get discouraged! I submitted my money making site to the 45n5.com list, and I was never even included! So, to rank 200+ is a lot better than being rejected! Actually, the “make money” sites are so prevalent on the net that to be the 200th best is a pretty good achievement.

Rankings are good, but they’re not the things that bring in money, or satisfaction. Look at my Technorati ratings for MEMWG, which really stink. Their system is all messed up somehow when it comes to my blog, but oh well… Don’t spend a lot of time worrying about it. By all means take off the chicklet and work on other things….

Hi Bob, Thanks for dropping by. And for shring. Indeed to be 200th out of a list that includes the Chows and the Cows and the Rowses is certainly better thna a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

However I was more or less just thinking outloud as I wrote the post, wondering if my focus is in the right place ,,, and along with some other readers I have more or less concluded that my focus has been off. I am not going to ask Mark to remove me … but I think I’ll go in stealth mode for a bit and see if I can keep my eyes more on the prize.

Eric, thanks so much for coming by and for your insightful comment. Ha ha I hadn’t been thinking of Technorati in a while, now you’ve brought the back into the picture *smile*.

As an old ‘country boy’ friend of mine used to say … It’s enough to make a train take a dirt road.

Your advice is absolutely well-founded, I’ve watched MEMWG grow nicely, and more importantly, become ever more useful over the past few years, sometime it seems almost in spite of rating and ranking services, certainly not because of tem.
