by Management Consulted

Consultants can bad a negative reputation – charging $2 million-plus for 10 weeks work that results in a lot of fancy PowerPoint presentations, all of which are archived away soon after BCG or Monitor leaves the client.

Below, Ill paint a more optimistic (and personally held) view on the key reasons why companies need business consultants. Youll have a better understanding of management consulting as a future career.

1) Staff augmentation – the least value-added role that consultants offer. Companies often have short-term staffing needs (in the case of government work, this can extend for several years) due to a variety of factors (eg, company downsizings, unplanned growth). While expensive, it can be commonplace for operational consulting firms (eg, Deloitte) and, to a lesser extent, public sector consulting firms (eg, Booz)

2) External change force aka political cover. It can be hard for companies to do whats needed (eg, sacred cows) – particularly when it comes to employee layoffs, salary reductions, major operational changes. Hiring business consultants can help accomplish needed goals with sufficient political cover in case select parties protest (eg, displeased Board or disgruntled employees) or things go wrong (Despite the significant cost increase, we implemented BCGs recommendations ” theres little that what we could have done better)

3) Best practices across sectors and functions (eg, organization, supply chain) – consultants have the privilege of:

a) Serving a multitude of clients in the same industry (eg, Transportation, Energy) b) Serving a multitude of clients facing similar problems across different industries (eg, Middle East expansion, Northeast Asia outsourcing)

This allows them a sort of pattern recognition for effective solutions, applying lessons learned in applicable situations.

4) Analytical manpower

Similar to staff augmentation, companies often need help executing strategies where their capabilities and knowledge are lacking. Consultants can be of great value given their training and resources – another reason why consulting jobs are so hard to come by.

5) New perspectives

Companies often need an outside viewpoint – youd be amazed at the amount of value business consultants can add based on the most commonplace observations. Critics contend that this is evidence of consultants selling common sense, but for front-line workers up to senior executives, it can be easy to fall into daily routines without casting a sharp eye towards self-criticism and improvement.

6) Skillset augmentation and training

Id argue that every consulting project – particularly ones with close client interaction – incorporates employee training as a primary ingredient. Big recommendations are worthless if clients dont implement and maintain suggested changes after Bain leaves. Thus, a central part of what business consultants do is to train client employees on necessary knowledge, capabilities, and mindsets.

If you have a client retiring under the CSRS (Civil Service Retirement System) with unused sick leave … or you have a client whose employed soon to be ex-spouse is employed under CSRS, there may be many thousands of dollars on the table that you haven’t thought about.

Typically, even a professional actuary-based valuation of the employee’s pension is not going to look into this little ‘gotcha’ … unused sick leave. Each fedral Employee accrues sick leave at the rate of 13 days per year … normally 4 hours per pay period. The hours of unused sick leave an employee may have saved up can’t be cashed in for money. And if the employee in question is under FERS, those hours are essentially good for nothing except taking time off in the event of sickness. But if you are working with a CSRS member, it’s an important matter to decide how to account for and handle sick leave in the employee’s account at the time of filing for divorce (or at any other time the couple’s assets are ‘frozen’ for valuation). It’s not uncommon at all for an employee to have 6 months or even a year’s worth of accumulated sick leave. Unlike annual leave which has a cap or ceiling on accumulation, unused sick leave just builds and builds.

If it has no cash value, though, why would an attorney or valuator care? The answer is easy. In the CSRS this accumulated sick leave is added to the employee’s actual time in service to figure the years and months of service upon which the employee’s annuity is based. If an employee has, for example, 2000 hours of sick leave at the time the divorce is filed and the employee then decides to arbitrarily just “burn” the sick leave during the six months or so that the divorce proceedings take, the employee’s retirement annuity may be more than a percent lower than it would have been.

Doesn’t the government itself control the abuse of sick leave? Well, on paper and by law they certainly do, but in practicality this control is often not all that precise. An employee can easily take a couple days every week or so without arousing the supervisor’s suspicions and invoking any tighter level of control. It’s really the business of the attorneys and the divorcing couple to look into this on their own, because once the hours are “burned”, they are gone and they can’t be recovered after the fact by court order or any other common remedy.

See the chart at: http://www.opm.gov/fers_election/facts/ri83-8.htm

For the complete picture on how unused sick leave is computed. Note that only entire month’s worth of hours count, so there’s no need to try to control things too closely. It’s to both party’s advantage, though, to make an informed decision as to how many hours of sick leave are expected to be in the employee’s account at retirement time.

Disclaimer: As with all information you read on this web site, remember I an not an attorney, nor actuary, nor personnel specialist. If you’ve read this far through a post this boring I can almost guarantee you need a professional … seek one.

by Bobbie McKee

[I:http://retiredpay.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/BobbieMcKee1.jpg]People’s lives nowadays are focused on one thing, catching up to everyone else. Everything is fast paced when it comes to career, opportunities and relationships. People barely have the time to stop and look around them to assess what they have and what’s going on in the world. Because of this hyped up and fast paced way of life people are barely connected with the people that matter the most.

Some friends and family never really know what is going on with each other. There is a solution to all of this and it’s what they call social networking, the question is why do people network in a network?

There are a lot of reasons why and here’s a short list of the reasons why:

1. Know new people. Just about every social networking websites says meet new people and the fact of the matter is that it’s what it’s actually all about. Meeting new people over social networking websites is the primary objective of having social networks. It’s like speed dating, people meet people assess if they like them or not and add them in their network of friends. It’s a great way of finding out how small the world is.

2. Finding lost friends. If there’s a cheap way of finding a long lost friend it’s through social networking websites, it’s because people hate being left behind in all the techie stuff that they make their own network. One of the features that a lot of social networking websites have is the “how are you connected” feature. It shows you the link that goes back to the person who introduced you to that person that you have on your network. Another feature is the “friends you have in common” feature, this allows you to see who are the people you have in common in your network. And chances are if you have someone in common it’s easy to look for somebody else.

3. Chat away. If you got nothing better to do with your life, chat the day away. Forums or discussion boards on social networks are available for those people who have a lot to say but have nobody to talk to. I know it’s sad rightbecause of the power of freedom of speech everybody has the right audience to listen into what you got to say.

4. Be part of an interest group. One of the good things about social networking websites is that there’re always people who share what you like to do. Crazy as your hobby may sound there’s bound to be a few people doing what you do. Not so special anymore right? And all along you think that you’re weird because you like collecting stamps so you can lick them, but on second thought wouldn’t it be better to belong.

5. Blog. Blogging or weblogs are the current replacement of a journal. It’s a little space in cyberspace where you get to rant as much as you like, write poetry, curse at people, curse at the government, curse at the Idol judges, shares your thoughts on almost anything and everything under the sun.

6. Post your face in cyberspace. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a place where you can put all of those memories for people to envy? Indeed, social networking is a great way of showing off to your friends what you’ve accomplished and what other things you like to have.

Forex trading is becoming one of the most popular ways among those who like to make money online. With the advent of the internet many people have started trading in the forex market as one can earn money sitting in the comforts of their home. Forex trading involves certain amount of financial risk; however, with little extra caution and appropriate planning one will be able to make money without sweat.

One need to be good at speculation in order to engage in forex trading. It is essential to have a very good understanding of the currency exchange patterns in the market. Another important factor that is crucial to make money here is correct timing. Though forex trading operates somewhat similar to share market it does not bear such great risks of the share market.

One can make money through forex trading in two ways depending on the trading strategy employed. It can be either through short term trading or it can be through long term trading. It is totally up to the individual to decide on their trading scheme at any given point of time.

In short term Forex trading, the trader observes the currency patterns to take advantage of the sudden rise or fall of the currencies. The trader does not wait long to make money here. Profit is seen through short term exchanges; the strategy is used here is to make swift changes with little profit margin. Short term trading requires a certain level of experience to see profit.

Long term trading tries to capitalize on stable currencies those grow stronger gradually. When someone wants to try their hand on forex trading to make money, long time trading is better suited as it will give time for the beginner to understand the market and the way it operates. Trading activity is very little here when compare to short term trading.

Today, there are literally hundreds of Forex trading training courses available for beginners. These training courses will provide the students with all the basic information regarding the Forex trading and how to avoid risks, handle loss and every thing they need to make money in this field. You will also be introduced to some of the tools those are available in the Forex trading market that can be used to see better profits.

Just to be on the safer side, to start with one must invest in forex trading only the money that they can spare. This has to be considered only as a secondary source of income. It is not advisable to invest your entire savings in this trade as it involves risk. Moreover, forex trading should not be made as your main source of income at least until you settle well with the trade and master it. Another important rule of thumb is to go steady with the profit margin and not to wait for too long either to make more profit or to salvage loss. You will be able to make money if you adhere to these basics.

When you are starting off with your Forex trading, you must invest only in currencies those are not highly volatile. There are a number of factors those are connected with the Forex trading and the currency market. Most often than not, these reasons are less obvious to the beginners. So to make money here, one should draw up a strategy that will work for them. The strategy should be backed up by a thorough analysis of the global market. Beginners should allow themselves time for the learning curve and not discouraged if they are unable to make money at the rate they expected.

Personally I have never lacked for evidence that I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but today’s example seems to really point this out. Not that I really, seriously would have thought of bribing the judge in my divorce … or that I wish he would be sentenced to jail … well maybe for a few months *smile*.

Here’s a guy who not only gives the whole legal profession and justice system a bad name, but sadly, points out the need for you to be a lot more careful about choosing a divorce attorney than you might think.

NEW YORK (AP) — An ex-judge who accepted expensive gifts in exchange for helping fix divorce cases and a former state lawmaker convicted in a scheme to shake down a judicial candidate were sentenced to prison Tuesday. Former Brooklyn state Supreme Court Justice Gerald Garson, 74, was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison. Garson, 74, wept as he asked for leniency, claiming the cigars, cash and other gifts never influenced his decisions. But he also admitted that when he saw hidden-camera videos of his shady dealings in chambers, “I was appalled, embarrassed and ashamed of my demeanor.” Garson was convicted of receiving bribes and accepting rewards for official misconduct but acquitted on four lesser counts. The sentencing judge had no sympathy for him.

I can not emphasize strongly enough the need to treat divorce as the life-changing event that it really is …. especially if Military Pensions, CSRS, or FERS government pensions are involved. One of those $50 “File Your Own Divorce” packets could be the most expensive 50 bucks you ever spend in you life, bar none.

Not every divorce attorney even knows what Federal Pension plans really are and the ins and outs of how they work, so make darn sure you check and check thoroughly into the experience of the lawyer you are considering.

The saddest thing in the featured case above, to me, is not that that Justice Garson “went bad” … these things happen, it’s part of the human experience. The saddest part to me is that the misconduct went on for years and the attorneys for the “losing side” in Judge Garson’s cases apparently did little or nothing. They knew … for sure they knew … it doesn’t take a jurisprudence doctorate to know when you are losing out when you know the points of law you are bringing up are “winners” … but it does take guts to raise the flag within the tight little buddy-buddy community of lawyers and judges. The lack of personal integrity of dozens who had to have known, long ago is what disturbs me.

I guess I need to add another question to my “selecting a divorce attorney” questioning process … “What would you do if it became obvious we where getting shafted by a crooked judge?”

This article covers the basic essentials of blogging, including your writing style, blog category and the content of your blog. Planning your blog can be hard, especially if you do not know what you want to talk about. It could be extra hard if you do not have the necessary experience in blogging. However, knowing what you want to talk about can easily come to you once you start browsing and reading other blogs. You can take ideas from those blogs, expound on them and make them the basis of your own blog.

Blogging Categories: generally, there are a few types of blog. Nevertheless, there are three popular types of blogs: the organizational, business and personal blogs.

The first category, the organizational blog, uses the power of blogs to communicate either externally with the public or internally within their organizations. This kind of blog has the purpose of facilitating internal communication among employees, colleagues and other organizational personnel. In addition, organizational blogs normally publish information that is of interest to the public. In certain instances, there are organizational blogs that publish details about seminar schedules, meetings, and announcements for their clients, customers or members.

Business blogs, on the other hand, are for promoting services or products offered by businesses in order to help increase profits, revenue and interest in potential consumers. These kinds of blogs look for ways to increase their reputation and authority with salesmen, customers and partner vendors. They do this by publishing content that expresses their expertise and knowledge within a specific market section, niche or industry.

Personal blogs are those blogs that have contents that are more a reflection of that blogger’s opinions and thoughts. Normally, they are used to publish articles that voice their points of view on several kinds of events and topics. Bloggers who publish personal content usually find pleasure in documenting their everyday lives, stream of consciousness and even their hatred of specific events through articles that reflect their mood.

The Target Audience. Your target audience and blogging style ought to be hand in glove. The moment you think of creating your own blog, you should first realize what your target audience is. You need to understand what they want, need and desire to read about. The blog you create and the contents you write needs to provide quality and value to the readers in order to be effective in establishing communication and an expanding readership.

More so, the sort of blog you want to create essentially creates its own target audience. For instance, an organizational blog is meant for those who are members or clients of a certain organization. Although the target audience may be limited, there is a good chance for consistency with regards to the dialogue you create with your readers and eventually more people will be interested in your blog.

The afore-mentioned personal blogs are not normally designed for social dialogue with a definite target readership of any category and is rather meant to serve as a collection of your musings. These kinds of blogs are best reserved for your close friends and family whether or not they can be called your target audience is another question.

However, if you identify your target audience properly, the messages that you want everyone to know about will be targeted effectively automatically. Some of the greatest joys of blogging derive from your enthusiasm in publishing significant information for a community where there is an opportunity for the free exchange of opinions between the readers and yourself.

My colleague Drew over at MrGPT.com has started a neat looking 7 week series to show you, step by step, how to build a website that makes money.

This won’t be for everyone, perhaps, but it will be a great help for many who are suffering ‘analysis paralysis". Most people who fail to make money online … whether their goal is to empower their retirement, earn a little to pay for those Christmas bills or even just to expand their knowledge, fail because they never do anything. There are so many routes you can take, so many pluses and minuses, so many things to learn that it seems overwhelming. And if you try to learn it all and analyze all the paths, it is overwhelming.

So here’s what MrGPT and I suggest. Do this one thing. Go subscribe to MrGPT (oh, by the way, you are subscribed here, aren’t you? www.retiredpay.com/feed ?)

Then follow along in the seven week program.

At the end of the seven weeks you will have a website that is earning money.

You will also have a wealth of knowledge about what works and what doesn’t .. at virtually no cost.

And you will have the confidence to take what you learn in this simple primer and expand upon it, or change course and start making money online in with a different technique.

It is virtually impossible to lose in this deal. This is not an eBook or some other product you have to pay for and then get a refund on if you don’t like it. It is not a membership group or anything that will tie you down. It is just a simple explanation of how to take some basic money making techniques and applying them in the real world.

Recommended.

And here’s my Christmas gift offer: To set up a website that makes money online you almost certainly need web hosting. In fact, is his first installment Drew mentions several excellent (and cheaP0 sources. But here’s what I’ll do for any reader of Retired Pay World: Just send me an email that tells me you want to participate in this project and the URL you want for your website and I will host it for you … free … for 6 months. Simple as that.

The only conations I’ll make are the site must be legal, non-porn, realistic in size and that I reserve the right to refuse or demand change in any site to make it meet my server suppliers terms of service … but there’s no other requirement. I have space and bandwidth available in my reseller hosting account and I would like to see this project take off … so there is one more stumbling block removed. Offer remains open until I decide I can no longer accept newcomers … so I would not wait around, but do it now.

No cost for the teaching, no cost for the hosting, what else is holding you back? Just do it.

Once you do you’ll see why I so often say, especially to my fellow retirees and seniors online, do not tell me you can’t make money online.

A few days ago I posted about finding business ideas … mainly being aware of the ideas that are right in front of you almost every day. But maybe you just honestly can’t find anything to get enthused about, annoyed about, passionate about. Idea block can be just like writer’s block. So here are some ideas to get your juices flowing and get you off the dime:

Enlist a Couple Hundred-thousand Online Researchers

Now, of course, you could stand on the street corner and holler, “Hey, whatcha want”? I’m sure you’ll get some kind of response …but I’ve heard that some city’s drunk tanks aren’t all that comfortable, and very few have Internet capability, so here’s a couple “better ideas”.

Search Newsgroups – What interests you? Are you into baseball, traveling, knitting sweaters, picking stocks, comparing insurance plans or learning to take better pictures of the grandchildren? It doesn’t matter, there is a newsgroup or Yahoo or MSN Group or Google Group that covers the subject. (In the rare case that you can’t find one, start one … it will become a gold mine of ideas). The entries in these groups are always full of people complaining something or other isn’t going right for them .. often headed by those words I told you not to use yesterday … “If Only”. “If Only” is a virtual contract solicitation for someone, anyone to solve a problem. Jump on it, if you know a better way.

Check Yahoo Answers – Yahoo Answers is a little gem that Yahoo has run for some time now that is a great place to find out what people don’t know, wish they knew or are confused about. If someone takes the time to sit down and type out a question that certainly means they have a need … which ones can you fill?

Read The Current Literature

There is that old expression going around that “there’s nothing new under the sun”. Some may chose to argue about it, but by and large it is pretty true. As an academician would say, search the literature:

Search Websites – Use a search engine to find websites on the same topic that you are looking for ideas on. Read their articles and see where you can share your own insight or expand on their ideas. In addition to search engine built-in queries for “Similar Pages” you can also find free and/or free trial software that searches for sites with keywords, themes and content that resembles your own or potential competitors sites. Make a list as if you were going to link to similar sites of value (later on you will want to link to some of those sites anyway) and see what those established sites are “all about”. Great source of ideas.

Browse and Read Blogs – Blogs are technically websites, but I feel they still differ enough to deserve a separate mention. In general ‘classic” websites are oriented around themes, keywords and pages while blogs are oriented around temporal information … the subject of the day, so to speak. read blogs on subjects that interest you … especially the archives and older posts of bloggers that you “connect” with, and you’ll find thousands of ideas. It isn’t really required to give credit for topic ideas, but it is a nice thing to do. If you’ll look closely many of the most successful bloggers routinely publish posts that are just links and comments about what is new, and what other bloggers are thinking about/writing about. It’s not only courteous to point your new readers to what an established blogger has written abut … it’s a true service to both your readers and your inspirational idea source. As an example, many thoughts I this post were written by Derek Beau under the title of finding ideas for blog posts and articles. They are all that and more, so I’ve built upon them, added to them and added my own methods. No reason you can’t either. Words and the way they are strung together are copyrighted … ideas, however, belong to everyone.

Read Books – The best benefit of getting topic ideas from books is that a large percentage of your readers will probably never have heard of the book or read the content before. If you have a vague thought about entering into business “X”, go to Amazon and search for words related to that business. Not only will the books that have been written educate just from their title’s and synopses, but you might want to buy a couple, read and even write reviews of them as part of the web-based part of your new business. If the book has “gangbuster” content, then say so, and explain why. If the book is a hollow shell and not worth the time of readers, tell them that too … with reasoned and annotated references.

Watch Television – What TV shows are there that relate to your potential business idea? or what TV shows are there that point out how clueless many people are about certain topics. There’s the germ of a business idea in every dumb thing Hank Hill does and in every show on Iron Chef or Nat Geo or HGTV.

Set Google News Alerts: Go to Google Alerts and set “as the happen” or “daily summary” alerts for areas of interest. Suppose you have an interest in airline travel … maybe you used to work for an airline or were a travel agent. Set some Google Alerts on keywords and phrases in those industries and sit back and watch your mailbox fill up with excellent “idea seeds” for articles and business needs in that area. This is my ‘top earner” source. I get most of my ideas for blog posts, as an example, from Google Alerts set for the subjects of my blogs and it pays … believe me it does.

OK, I’m now out of ideas. Actually, that’s a really big lie. The time I have spent writing this has my head spinning. There are so many ideas out there it’s mind-boggling. I’ve got to put together some good content more attuned to filtering and evaluating ideas than how to find them … just be open and you too will find many.

Set up some alerts? Keywords? Wow, this is getting technical right away, Dave … my head aches.

OK, don’t reach for the pain reliever just yet. Let me explain a couple things and when you see how simple what I’m proposing is, I don’t think your head will hurt at all.

You’ll recall I have been writing about … even started a shoet series here on retired Pay World about making money with the knowledge you already possess using an eBook, an audio or audio-video tutorial or even actual “real” print books about a subject you already know well, or are motivated (passionate about) to do research in. The series so far is at:

eBook Answers — Series Intro

eBook Answers — Day 1

eBook Answers — Day 2

in this, the next installment, I was going to talk about how you can use Google AdWords or a competing PPC (Pay Per Click) service to “prove” the market for your idea before you make an investment.

But like all well-laid (and then delayed) plans online, I have a much better installment here. As you can see from the quote above, a fellow blogger name of Willie Crawford has spelled it all out for us in much greater detail than I would be able to. I’d advise you to read Willie’s post and his other guidance on this subject in detail … his reasoning is sound and you really can, as the heading suggests, prove to yourself that there is a market for a product … electronic or even paper … before you spend one thin dime. Any time you can order up a technology this comprehensive and this useful with just a few clicks of the mouse … and no credit card number … you just have to love the ‘Net and the directions blogging and Internet marketing are heading.

On top of all the other good reasons I can think of to learn this stuff, it makes you younger. (well, feel younger, anyway, and that’s half the battle, isn’t it?)

As always, I welcome comments, constructive criticisms, disagreements, questions or just plain talk. You can leave a comment to this article or email me direct at: davestarr (at) gmail (dot) com or call me on 1-719-423-8872.

by J. LeBlanc JR.

What is wealthy affiliate? Have you ever heard of it? Up until 2 1/2 a half months ago neither did I. Since I have started Internet marketing I have bought countless Internet books and programs from so-called internet “guru’s” who promised me riches. Most didn’t deliver any practical information, and some were just flat-out scams!

I had seen a couple of ads for Wealthy Affiliate and even took the free tour. After taking a look around a few times I became more and more interested in what this site had to offer. Now, I know you’ve all heard it before but honestly this was too good to be true and I actually mean that. Needless to say I was still a little skeptical. I would hash it over and get some more information about this so-called wealthy affiliate University.

After reading a few reviews and articles and a little more thought I finally decided to give it a try.

Wow!!!

Once I become a wealthy affiliate I wasn’t prepared for what I have found. There are so many excellent resources available with”WA” There is so much information and tools, I thought i would collapse from sensory overload.

All the tools, software, and resources that I had looked for all over the Internet the past few years were all right here in one place. And at no extra charge. Can you believe it? All the time and money that I wasted(oh well, you live and you learn.)

Well let’s see what makes “WA” different. At first you will be a little overwhelmed at the amount of information that the “WA” University offers. Take your time and follow the steps that they put into place for you. You will be given an 8 week plan to follow, stick to this because this will give you the mindset you will need to succeed. Check out all the tutorials.

My legitimate review! If you’re still reading this you probably noticed that I haven’t said anything negative about “WA”. That’s because I haven’t found anything negative about it. What I will say is, if you’re going to spend any money on any kind of resources, software, e-books, or mentoring. Which could cost you thousands of dollars. Take a look at “WA”. Honestly it is the best investment I have ever made… Don’t take my word for it though,I’ll let you take a look around and see for yourself.

I’ve been a member of “WA” for about 2 1/2 months now and I cannot stress how happy I am about my decision to join. I’m not gonna pull your leg and say that I’m making $500 a day, or I’ve struck it rich. What I will tell you is that after a couple of months I am seeing consistant profits, And I am learning how to make an income as an internet marketer. No matter what the product is…

What’s included with your membership…

♦ Wealthy Affiliate forum

♦ Click Bank research tools

♦ Web hosting

♦ Site builder by site Rubix.

♦ Rapid writer content creation tool

♦ One-on-one mentoring — priceless!

And so much more. And believe it or not it’s all FREE to all Wealthy Affiliate members.

You also get the newly added Nitche Q., the most comprehensive niche research system available anywhere. And guess what, that’s also FREE!!!

And don’t forget the famous “WA” forum, there you can get all the direction and advise you can handle. You won’t feel intimidated cause’ newbies as well as more experienced marketers offer a hand in helping you succeed. You’ll even get feed back from Kyle and Carson themselves.(the Founders)And they will personally walk you through the fundamentals of internet marketing.
