There is a good start on blogging to be found in A Basic Guide to Blogging. After reading that article you were most likely curious enough to give blogging a try. By now, you may be well on your way, or maybe you still have questions.
Even though the topic of blogging may seem simple at first glance, it is actually one of those topics that seems to grow the more you get into it. By taking in this additional information, I think your view of blogging will expand.
There are quite a number of blogging sites on the web now, in addition to all those personal web pages that may have their own blog. If you scan through some of the blogs that are out there, you are going to be amazed at the variety, and possibly overwhelmed by the amount of information. People blog in different ways for different purposes. One type of blog is essentially one person’s comments on their life or on their view of the world around them. This type of site is subjective and in a relatively short amount of time you will get to know the author through their writing. You then have the option of communicating with the author through comments or email. This may be where blogging actually started, just as a forum where you can say what’s on your mind.
On the other end of the spectrum are blogs that are created and maintained to provide information to people. A blog may be strictly focused on one topic, such as bass fishing, or it may be broader and cover a group of related topics, such as Political Action in Ohio. Even these blogs will include personal views and ideas – it’s part of blogging. For the most part these blogs will be about providing information.
You, as the blogger need to decide what you want your blog to be like. As you consider this, remember that blogging about things you are interested in will make blogging more enjoyable for you, and also for your readers.
Another issue that comes up is the community aspect of blogging. When you are just maintaining your own blog, this is not an issue. When you go to your blog site, you will only see your blog. If you join a community blogging site, you will find that development of relationships in the community is as important to some, as is the actual writing involved in blogging. Some examples of these community blogging sites are BlogFeast, BlogEvolve, BloggerParty, WritingUp, SoulCast. When you join these types of blogging sites (and they are all free) you will have your own blog, but your postings will also show up as part of the community list of blog entries. These are scrolling with the newest post at the top of the list. Advantages of these types of blogs include more traffic from visitors because there is a steady stream of new postings (at least for the busier sites) and exposure to more people who are resources to give you ideas or answer your questions.
Another common topic is the desire to make money as you blog. It is possible, but it will take time and effort. One common tool is Google’s AdSense feature. When you setup your blog with a Google AdSense account number, then ads will begin to appear before or after your posts. As people click on these ads, there is a small amount of money put into your account. This is why traffic to your blog is important. No traffic, no clicks. The more traffic your site gets, the more likely you will get a clicker. The key to making AdSense work is getting good traffic to your site. That is one obvious reason why you want to write with quality, and in a manner that people like to read. As you continue to blog you will learn about Search Engine Optimization and setting up links to your blog.
In addition to the AdSense approach to making money, there are also some sites that will pay you to write advertisements for services or products and to post these on your blog. Qualifying for these opportunities may also be dependent on the amount of traffic your blog gets, and how long your blog has been active. If you get approved at one of these sites, you can get paid for writing ads, and not waiting for clicks.
In summary, you want to blog for fun, keep on writing and learning and try some moneymaking opportunities. You will enjoy the process and learn much along the way.
I have included here a general link to BlogFeast, one of the community blogs. In addition there is a link to my blog on BlogFeast, just to show you how it works. There is no fee for BlogFeast, so feel free to look around.
