Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP): Is there anything on the horizon to allow a new buy-in for SBP?
Nothing I have heard of, Herbert. I’ll keep my ear to the ground and post something immediately I hear anything. Thanks for reading and commenting.
My truck was stolen last week and my statement form 1099R
was in in the vehicle.How can I get another copy of retired
statement form 1099R for 2008?
Hi David,
Sorry to hear of the theft. However the 1099 problem is easy. Just go to your account on Mypay: https://mypay.dfas.mil/mypay.aspx and you can print out as many copies as you need. If only getting the truck back was as easy.

Hi Dario. Thanks for commenting, but I am afraid I am over my head on this. I don’t know anything about disability pay and how that is supposed to work with retirement pay. And if I start offering advice in that area I could wind up hurting instead of helping.
I’d suggest you go somewhere they have experts that are on the side of the soldier, not the government. Some places to start: Your local American Legion post (you want to see the Service Officer). Your local VFW Post, since you did have foreign service. Your closest NCOA chapter or Retired Enlisted Association. Your local Disabled American Veterans post.
Best of luck, and God bless.
Hi David;
My name is Jim Hyatt, I served 22 years in the Army, Retired in 1989. I carried SBP on my son after retirement for a few years and then dropped it. Since then I have remarried and my question is; Is there someway now that I can buy back into the SBP program in order for my current wife to be covered?
Thank You
Jim Hyatt
Have any of you noticed that a W-2 gives you a better income tax rebate instead of a 1099-R? We were using TurboTax and it gave us a huge rebate as long as it was ‘W-2″ information, but when my husband put in it came from a 1099-R, the rebate dropped to the amount of tax paid. Does anyone know about this and why do retirees *have* to have a 1099-R versus a W-2?
@Bug: The answer to your question lies in the fact that a W2 is for earned wages, a 1099R is for retirement annuities … I don’t know the specific rules the IRS uses, but wages are wages and a retirement annuity is an annuity, not ‘earned’ income. Just because it is income doesn’t mean it is ‘earned’ income under the law.
@Jimmy L. Hyatt: Hi Jimmy, thanks for writing. You certainly can enroll in SBP for a new spouse … in fact you are required to inform DFAS of a new spouse. To register your new spouse, send DFAS a certified copy of your marriage certificate along with a completed DD Form 2656-6, Survivor Benefit Plan Election Change Certificate. You can find/fill out on line a 2656-6 here:
http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/infomgt/forms/eforms/dd2656-6.pdf
Send the completed DD Form 2656-6 to the following address:
