Positive About Parking

permitted parking Sign Are you a domainer (that is one who earns a substantial portion of their income from buying, selling or monetizing domains (URL’s))?  nope, I am not either, but it is one of my business interests and I certainly am a domain collector … I don’t want to say how many I own right now, because my wife reads this bog, but I am no longer getting rid of domains, I’m likely to own a lot more in the future.

Let me tell you a little about my domain history … the first domain I ever registered was highmap.com … I had a pretty interesting business idea, but failed to follow through on it and let the domain drop.  What is it now?  A "dead" advertising site … or is it dead?  According to DNSScoop, one of my favorite "yardstick" tools, the site, the domain, which apparently changed hands yet again just a month or two ago is already worth more than the year’s registration fee … and that’s with exactly zero effort or investment by the new owner, other then the $6 or $8 or $9 s/he spent.  Could it be worth substantially more in a year?  Absolutely.

But what if the new owner has no plans to develop the site … was their registration fee just wasted?  Not at all … they can do exactly as they are doing now .. "park’ the site with advertising and there’s an excellent chance the site will earn back more than the carrying costs for the year.  here’s an interesting article by Michael Gilmour, I truly big-time domainer of note.

… I thought that it would be really good to state my position:
1. I think that domain parking is currently the best model for monetizing masses of domains due to its scalability. I am very positive about domain parking!
2. I believe that on the whole parking companies are filled with really good people who work hard at providing an excellent service.
3. I believe that most parking systems have been built systems over time but sometimes "stuff just happens" and the technology throws up errors.
4. I think that it’s time that the industry took the next step towards maturity and begins to adopt standards…

Michael’s full article and a lot more about domaining are here.

So this "parking" thing is only for big guys, right?  Nope, not at all.  I have just a few domains parked and currently earning their weight .. one source, the one I use is Sedo.com, there are many others you might want to shop and compare.

Now the second tip for the day, and the reason I am positive about parking, as is Michael … it’s no big stretch to figure something out about parking and resultant clicks that may or may not come.

If the URL has keywords in the name, people will find it on searches, if it is not "keyword rich" they won’t find it.  Are all the "keyword rich" domain names already taken?

Absolutely not, but it can be a pain to find them.  here’s a link I just checked out by Eric Giguere that makes it  dirt-simple to find good, keyword rich un-registered domain names, … totally free.  Recommended.
