How Often Is Often Enough
I’ve been floundering a little bit here trying to work out in my own mind a little bit of a guideline for myself on how often to post to this blog and my other blogs as well. One school of though is that there’s a magic formula out there which will be ‘right’ for all blogging efforts.
Others, like this excellent post from Ades advocates taking an even more scientific approach, first analyzing the blogger’s goals and then recommending frequencies based on those goals, complete with analysis charts and graphs … everything but the PowerPoint. Still, an excellent read, I recommend it.
Objectives
- 1. Increase traffic, increase RSS subscriptions, increase PR
- 2. Establishing authority in certain field
- 3. Diary, ramblings, personal blog, hobby
Post-Per-Day Frequency
If you are in this category and if you want to increase your traffic, RSS subscribers, and PR then you need to publish at least one quality article per day, or up to 3 (but not more than 3) posts a day. “Quality” is the keyword here. The idea is simple here. You want your regular readers to come to your blog as frequently as possible. That means you want them to visit at least once a day, if they visit few times a day, that is even better….
There’s another school of thought … one I subscribe to, in part, and that is to blog only when there is something to say. Overall, in principle, this is the single “most right” answer. One should never, in my view, publish a post for the sake of publishing a post. I’ve done that, in the past, and I’ll bet a dollar to a doughnut you can spot those posts a mile away … I can, and I’m not proud of them.
There is often a lot to say, and not a lot of time to do so. More accurately, there is usually time but the time is never distributed in the right proportions to the post-worthy material. The most basic solutions to that part of the problem is, of course, using the “Future Posts” or “Date Time” feature of the blogging tool you are using. They virtually all have one and you can learn to use them in a short time. this post, for example is being written between 9pm and midnight on Saturday for my US readers … depending on which coast you’re closest to. I think I’ll set it to kick out to the ‘Net at about 9am eastern time, cause that will be a Sunday morning when many of you may be just getting up and settling down at the keyboard with a cuppa.
How often do you think blogs in general, or this one in particular, should publish … and when?

I don’t think there is a magic number or any formula on how many posts are the right number. I think this all depends on how much information you have to write about your blog topic. Sometimes it’s better to not write than to force yourself to write about something thats a non-topic. Know what I mean? Love the post! Thanks!
