John Chow University — Free Tuition

Here’s another income report I liked … just to show you why I’m interested in this “Blogging” thing:

One Full Year of Monetized Blogging

In September 2006, I decided to try a little experiment to see if it was possible to make money by blogging. Before that date, John Chow dot Com made zero. The blog was just a place for me to post my miscellaneous ramblings. However, one of the topics I like to ramble about is how to make money online so it made sense to do a case study on that by monetizing the blog.

John Chow dot Com finished September 2006 with $352.94 in blog income, all of it coming from Google AdSense. It’s amazing what can happen in only one year.

Total Blog Income For September 2007: $20,512.17

If someone would have told me in September 2006 that a year from now, the blog would make over $20,000 a month, I wouldn’t have believed it. Yet, here we are. I can only imagine where this blog will be in another year. Here’s the income breakdown.

John Chow’s complete post on monetized blogging is here:

Now why would I post something like this?

Well, the first thing that should cross your mind is I must be making some kind of monetized tie-in with John … some sort of affiliate scheme or link exchange or something like that.  If that was your first thought, then congratulations, you’re starting to ting like a web mogul … but the truth is, no, aside from being a long-time reader of John’s and from whatever “link love” his blog gets from my meager post (which sure isn’t much), there is no connection whatsoever.  In fact there are many times I don’t agree with John and I’m quite ready to say so when those times occur.

But if you want to engage in any kind of professional activity, you watch what the pros do … and John is nothing if not a consummate professional at what he does.  He makes money because:

The first time I ever read John was due to an AdSense ad he bought to promote his blog.  How many blogs have you come to the first time in that way?  And how many of them are now earning, net, over $20K per month?  How’s that for a lesson for the day?  Advertising, properly managed, does not cost, it pays.  And the beauty of the ‘Net and advertising vehicles like AdSense are that you can control your spending to the penny, advertise only on specific sites that you chose and pay only when someone whom you want to take an action makes a move … it’s unlike anything in the world of advertising in the past.  Jump on the train, it certainly hasn’t stopped building momentum yet!
