RP vs Stan — Who’s Retirement Income Advice Should You Listen To?

Tutor_ButtonNo, gentle readers, I’m not going to start a war with anyone … least of all Stan Spector, the “Stan” referred to in the title.  Stan Spector is a merger & acquisitions specialist working with family owned businesses.  He’s in the “experienced” age group, as I am.

Stan’s experience with full-time business has led him to write a book on how to restructure certain business models to fit a part-time or retirement lifestyle model.

I haven’t 9as yet) read Stan’s book … maybe he’ll send me a review copy, hint, hint).  But I have reviewed his sales material, bio and some other reviews of the book which leads me to concluded he knows what he’s talking about.

There are some other decent “Baby Boomer” income books out there on the market too … authors are welcome to contact me.

The “Tease” part of the headline … all good headlines have to have a “teaser” is that I am not going to tell you to listen only to Stan nor am I going to assert you should only listen to me.  The sources of information are nearly infinite and there has never, ever been  a better time for businesses that cater to the needs of ‘Boomers and why shouldn’t more of these businesses be run by ‘Boomers?

imageThe thing that caught my eye right away on Stan’s sales site was the graphic I used to link to him above.  “Tutoring, $200″ it reads.  Give you any ideas, not necessarily related to Stan or me?

Yep, you’ve heard it from me before and you are going to hear it from me again … you can make money online and as a senior/retiree you are sitting on an asset you haven’t even realized you have … and no, I don’t mean literally that part you are physically sitting on.

No matter what your career has been you have amassed a wealth of knowledge.  There are people out there who want that knowledge.  In the days before the ‘Net … not that many years ago … very few of the potential “providers” ever met up with the potential “clients”.  That has all changed now.  You can make money with your brain, right now and you do not need to go out on a limb, sell the family jewels or go back to college in your ’60’s to capitalize on it.  Three quick examples:

  1. Write a Book: I have no idea how “rich” Stan is going to become as the author of his book.  But I can tell you this … it’s being sold on Amazon and other trade outlets so his returns are not ‘zero”.  He’ll also forge business relationships and personal friendships from his work.  And he’s a published author with a commercial book in book stores.  Did you do that yet in your life?  I surely haven’t.
  2. Facilitate Learning: Where I live (the Republic of the Philippines) there are thousands and thousands of “Western” workers and retirees, some with very nice remuneration packages and many with school-age children.  There are already well-established distance learning programs for those who want their children schooled in “home country” style … but who will help the children through the rough spots and keep things on track while the parents are working?  Ideal for a retired teacher but you don’t need a teaching credential … you only need to be organized, like kids and learning and have access to the Internet.
  3. Keep Niche Knowledge Alive: My son, who is in his 30’s emulated some of my early training and learned quite a bit of classical machining … using lathes, milling machines and other tools that used to be controlled by hand by a skilled machinists.  Today this kind of work is mainly done by computer controlled automated machines and operators who are little more than “raw stock feeder robots”.  My son bought a machine like the one in the picture to keep his skills sharp.  He participates in many online forums with people interested in manual arts machining and reports to me, “Dad, someone ought to write a book, there are so many guys out there starving for knowledge.”

So what if you aren’t a business expert, a teacher/coach or a machinist?  The point is you have skills, experience and patience, something many are hungry to share … think about your assets.
