Thanks a Million, Janie!?!

You won’t see me posting very often about blogging mechanics.  But I do use WordPress and there are times that somehting just has to be said.  For a long time now I have noticed my blog directories getting filled with a number of plug-ins … many of which I don’t seem to be using.  In addition I always worry about them being out of date.  Came across this post this morning:

Thirteen “Lesser Known” Helpful WordPress Plugins

There are zillions of WordPress plugins available, with many new ones released each day. Some are well known and almost universally employed, e.g., Akismet, Google Sitemap Generator.

I have discovered some useful plugins that are not as widely known, but extremely helpful. If you are not using the following plugins, you might want to consider them:

1. WP Plugins Tracker

Are all of your plugins up to date? This plugin will add a link to your Dashboard, allowing you to see the version of each plugin you are using, as well the most recent release, allowing you to update. This is helpful because plugin developers frequent issue updates correcting bugs discovered and submitted to them by folks who have downloaded and employed the plugin. …

Took a fast look at the first one recommended and promptly lost about 2 hours of my day.  But I am very happy I did, I found dozens of mismatches and unused plugins on just two blogs … feels good when you clean up a mess.  A big shoutout to the WordPress Plugins Database for trying to get a handle on this runaway version control problem and to Janie for pointing these lucky 13 out … let’s see, if I work my way through the remainder of the list it should only be abut another 50 or 100 hours or so … maintenance is always necessary but not always easy.
