Checking On Your Competition

15/06/2009 by: Brian Basch

When managing your PPC advertising campaigns it is very important to know what your competition is doing. This will give you an indication as to what keywords are being used and how your competition is bidding. You can also build on your competitors’ successes and learn from their mistakes.

There are software programs available which will let you check what keywords your competitors are using. I would recommend the use of these programs if you sell popular items or if you are in control of multiple campaigns. Knowing the keywords others are using will allow you to experiment with the use of them as well as variations.

Secondly you can also see what sort of bids they are doing on important keywords. Once you know this you can have an idea of what to bid on these keywords yourself in order to get a good position for your ad. It is important to bid competitively but not to indulge in price wars. You should always bid within your budget. If you are getting out bid on certain keywords use variants that are not so expensive but will still bring in sales.

Another thing to consider is your competition’s ads. Looking at the ads your competitors are using can give you valuable insight into what works and give you great ideas for your own ads. You can look at your competitors’ ads by using Google’s preview tool, or by simply searching for your keywords and examining the ads displayed on the search page. When doing this you should look at their call to action, headlines, as well as the benefits. Remember, the idea here is to get ideas for your own ads, not to blatantly steal their ads. After looking at a few ads, you should get a good feel of what works and what doesn’t.

The final thing I recommend looking at is the competition’s landing pages. By following the links in their ads, you can get a good sense of quality layouts and presentation as well as the benefits and bonuses being offered.

When you look at your competitors and see what they are doing, you will get inspired with new ideas. You can put new life in your PPC advertising campaign and be spurred on to do better than your competitors. Part of good management is keeping an eye on your competitors and building on their successes. There is always room for improvement in your PPC advertising campaign and checking on your competitors will help you to do better.

Learning from your competitors gives you the opportunity to gain free advice for your own campaign. If you are serious about running a successful PPC advertising campaign it will be crucial. You may feel like you don’t need to improve upon your campaign. If that is the case, prepare yourself for failure. The PPC market changes constantly and without adaptations to your campaign you will not succeed. The easiest way to make these adaptations is to examine your competitors.
