If you want to sell books online successfully, you should have a love of two things, which are books and money. You dont have to be a book expert to sell books over the internet, but if you have a general interest in books, it will go a long way towards success. In addition, if you like to make money, you’ll be motivated to sell good books, and if you do a little research, you’ll find out what the best ones are. I’ve made a few dollars selling books online myself, and it’s become something of a hobby for me.
The first book I sold online was several years ago, when I was working in sales. One of the salespeople was cleaning out his desk because he was leaving. He had a new book that was on the subject of selling cars, which he had bought at a seminar he had attended. He said, “Maybe this’ll help make you some money, even though it didn’t help me do that.” Well, it did help me make money, although not quite in the way he intended. In fact, I listed it on eBay and it sold for $75.
I was pretty lucky with that one. While you are looking for books to sell online, dont expect to find the Holy Grail of books right off the bat. If you buy a book for a dollar and sell it for two fifty, you have made a hundred and fifty percent profit!
Ive found quite a few good places to buy books that I can turn online for a profit. Thrift stores are amazing. Their stock is always changing from week to week, and sometimes you can find a rare gem. The paperbacks sell from anywhere around 50 cents to a dollar, and hardbacks rarely go for over five dollars. Yard Sales are also a great place to find cheap books. A relative of mine was able to find a first edition Mothman Prophesy for a buck, and she sold it on eBay for over eighty dollars. You can even find books at bookstores you can turn for a profit once you get a little experience.
What types of books should you sell? What it comes to selling books online, what you sell is up to you. Informational books sell well, and that’s mostly what I deal in. If you are thinking about doing this for a living and not just a hobby, it makes sense for you to specialize in a type of book that you enjoy. That way, you have a knowledge and a passion for what you are selling, and that will come across to the buyer.
Finally, don’t buy those “book club edition” books. They’re just reader copies and not worth anything on the market. Books that are over 50 years old with dust jackets are almost always at least somewhat valuable, and first edition books are going to be your most profitable. Second edition books will make you a profit, too, but what you really want our first edition books whenever you can find them.
Places you can sell books: I’ve mentioned eBay a couple of times, but you can also check out places like Craigslist, Amazon, and other auction sites.
So if you are thinking about taking up this hobby and sell books online, its best to start small so you can get a feel for how it goes. As time goes on, you will get more proficient at it, and if you apply yourself, you can make some really good money. It really is very easy to sell books online, and its fun to do as well. Good luck and good selling!

Great article! I enjoyed the personal touch you gave it.
Adam Bertran’s last blog post..The hidden Buyers Waiting list on Amazon
Hi! I just wanted to add a quick comment about buying books to sell. If you buy books randomly you are sure to lose money. I got fed up looking for a easy way to look up books while on the go, so I took matters in my own hands.
I have made a site for mobile phones that looks up books by ISBN, author, or title, and displays sales rank and the lowest prices from a number of vendors.
The mobile site is:
scout.bookspy.net
and the main site is:
BookSpy.net
This site should work on most web enabled phones. It is free (for now). Hopefully someone else can get some use out of it!
