It Must Be Christmas

26/12/2008 by: RP

I found something good for Christmas.  From time to time I get emails or comments that ask me to share other sites with my readers.  About 90% of these are ‘spammy’ and worse most of them are not relevant to what I am trying to do here … empower seniors and retirees to supplement their retirement and enjoy the rest of their days rather than obsess with worry over them.

A few sites however are great and I am always happy when I weed through the ‘chaff’ and find a gem.  That’s what I am talking about today, a true gem:

Geezer_Guide home page

The Official Geezer Guide — learning how to supplement senior’s income and earn extra money to enjoy their retirement.

There are a lot of sites online about seniors or propertied to be of interest to seniors, but many are just playing a numbers game … trying to capitalize on the fact that there are a lot of us seniors out there, and there will be more of us every day.  As I try to do with this site, the Official Geezers Guide really is about real opportunities for seniors, not just the usual sign up to AARP or buy this or that insurance crappola.  Highly Recommended.

Unlike so many sites of today this one not only promises real value, it delivers.

2009 is just around the corner.  The situation for retirees in the US and many other countries appears bleak … and the bobble heads of today’s media don’t seem to help much.  The way I see it there are basically two things you can do:

  • Give up, whine (like the useless AARP does) and sink further into the morass of desperation and self-pity, or …
  • Grab life by the horns and do something about it.

I originally started this site as a resource for Federal and Military retirees, especially those who were undergoing divorce.  It remains as such.  I’ll add more retiree resources in 2009, and that’s a promise.  Over time, though I found that people were more interested in the mechanics of retirement itself and especially in ways to empower and supplement that income.

So that’s where my major thrust and focus has been … helping seniors and retirees supplement and empower their retirement … by both online and off line means,

A funny family story that goes along with my review of the Geezer Guides.  On the intro page I noticed the author trying to clear up the egregious myth that seniors and retirees don’t know how to use computers.  But he sort of ‘weasel worded’ about his 80-something mother, who apparently hasn’t yet caught the ‘bug’.

My youngish (40-something) and lovely wife Mita empowers her retirement with a very popular blog … www.unofficialcook.com .  One day she got an email from a cousin that she hadn’t heard from in years … who was actually a focal point for a branch of the family who had disappeared into the wilds of California some years back.  It was nice to get back in touch.  Know how it came about?

The patriarch, the 93 year-old uncle in California read about people doing vanity searches on Google … you know, typing in your name and seeing what pops up on line that mentions you … so, he did.  To his surprise he found himself on Mita’s food blog in reference to one of his favorite dishes.

When you were the parent with small children teaching them to try new things was an important part of your job.  That responsibility hasn’t changed just because you’re older now.  Goy any 60-something, 70-something, 80-something (or even older) relatives out there who aren’t using the Web?  Get them going online for 2009.  In addition to togetherness and family fun there are important health reasons the ‘Net is good for you! (see my next post on this Internet and mental health subject)
