It’s Not The How, It’s The Why

07/03/2008 by: RP

Just came an excellent post from my colleague Christine OKelly, the Self Made Chick that discusses why we often don’t succeed by copying what has already proven successful.

… It doesn’t really matter what you’re great at – there are people who need what you have to offer. There are ways to build profitable freelance businesses from just about any skill. Instead of only looking for things that are already out there, look inside yourself and discover why your experiences are valuable and then figure out how to turn it into a business… Read Christine’s full article on the perils of copying .

I must say I related to her thoughts very strongly, because I am a great data-gathering procrastinator.  Just as soon as I figure out the secret formula so and so is using, or find the hidden key to the XYZ technique my money will just roll in.

Well, the true facts are, it won’t.  That doesn’t mean I won’t make money … or that you can’t as well.  But what it does mean is that I can’t just put up a blog and hang AdSense ads on it and expect to become Darren Rowse, or write some techno-geek reviews and knock John Chow of his perch.  When I do make money, I make it by doing things that I know about and doing them in my own way.  That’s your free formula for the day as well.  Go read all of the article, if you are interested in making money online or off line.  You’ll learn something.

Bottom line to take away?  You are unique.  You have a unique skill set.  Don’t do what I do or what anyone else does.  learn the ‘why’ of what successful people are doing, not the ‘how’.  The ‘how’ should be your way and your way only.  Do what you do do well, and success will follow.
