Ever hear of "Best of the Web"(BOTW)? They are an old line, old school directory service (they date from 1994, back when Sergy and Brin were still in high school . Even if Google is the big name people think of, a company that’s been going strong in this competitive space for 14 years now (a double lifetime in Internet years) certainly bears a little scrutiny.

The way BOTW works is they list people’s sites for an annual fee and review the sites regularly to make sure they stay current and fit into the guidelines they were established under. No need for that today, you may think, but hundreds of thousands of web site owners still think it is worth listing with BOTW.

So what has this got to do with making money without a website? Actually, quite a bit. BOTW has a full-featured affiliate program which allows you to refer people to the service with or without your own web site … and the commissions are not bad, 25% or better. Unlike many commission programs, the majority of BOTW’s customers are annual subscriptions and you get the recurring commissions on the renewals as well … so there is certainly a profit potential here.

But what really caught my attention was a recent note from my friend Brendon who, it turns out, is a fan of BOTW and pointed out a great new feature they are getting off the ground (isn’t the web kewl when an Australian points out to an American in the Philippines what is happening back in the US pf A)?

Local search. It’s a hot item in many company’s business plan and it’s a proven way to get business. So what would this mean to you. Mr. or Mrs. or Ms. "make money online without a web site"?

Start with a list every business you know who is not in the BOTW local directory
Use this kewl feature to start adding local business listings … no web site required, no charges incurred.
Tell each business owner what you’ve done for them, free, to help them grow
Ask for their repeat business or any other tie-in deals you think appropriate.
Rinse, reapply and repeat … there are millions upon millions of businesses who need this

Your cost? Absolutely zero. Your web skills required? Absolutely zero. Your potential? 25% of each business’s "spend" for life. Like being a Madison Ave. ad agency without the office expense. Do not tell me you can not make money online. You may choose not to try, for whatever reason, but there is no reason on God’s green earth that prevents you from doing it, if you actually want to.
