One thing which sometimes takes people by surprise when I talk about this subject … making money online without a website is by top choice … I saved it here for part number three in this three part series because I think it is the single best choice for anyone who:

  1. For whatever reason does not want to have his or her own website
  2. Is willing to work … that is do the things a business person needs to do, such as bookkeeping, marketing and customer service

OK, that’s me you say, so what’s the secret sauce recipe?  eBay.  yes that often maligned, very often misunderstood "little" business off there on the side of the "real" internet that great many bloggers and other online legends in their own mind often forget or dismiss with a shake of their head.

Well shake your head and be dismissive all you want, but with over 84 MILLION active users spending almost $2,000 a second (that’s $60 BILLION a year, folks!), eBay is one of the true success stories in the short history of the Internet.  To put that fantastic number of zeros into a more familiar scale, that is about 4 (yes four) time the revenue of Google last year or approximately the same multiple of Microsoft last year as well.  eBay is big business.  make no mistake on that.

A good friend of mine online is a blogger of some note and operates number of other online-oriented businesses.  Unlike a retiree like me who always eats, online or off, this fellow actually lives or dies online … and I’ve visited him, he actually lives well, thank you very much.

So what does my friend have to do with eBay?  Well, not long after I got to know him I started talking with him about how he got started in his online endeavors and what the most profitable venture he had ever been in was.  Know how he got started and how he made enough money to support his young and growing family in fine style for years?  eBay.  You could have knocked me over with a feather.  I thought this guy was (in my untutored view at the time) "so much more sophisticated than that".

At the time I first got that revelation about eBay I had never sold a thing there.  I should, though, have had a clue.  In my previous "earth based" GPS Tracking business I needed access to legal copies of MicroSoft MapPoint software.  After a lot of … hmmm what’s the technical therm here … ah, I remember, "ass kissing" , yes that’s what it amounted to, the majesty of Microsoft let me be a sub-partner to a sub-partner of a Microsoft Software Partner and gave me a wholesale price for the low volume of MapPoint I needed.  I immediately decided it was them who needed to do the anal osculation, however, since their ’special, 29 conditions attached wholesale partner price was about twice what I could by the exact same product, brand new, for on eBay.

Needless to say from then until I closed that business I had a very nice relationship with a couple of great sellers on eBay.  I ordered, they shipped, I marked up and re-shipped to my customers .., and everyone paid less than ‘list price’ and we were all happy.  An excellent business tool that eBay.

So, to make along story short.  You want to make money … up to and including serious money, without a web site?  you want to be part of a $60 billion dollar business with nothing down and nothing at risk?  Get yourself signed up on eBay and if you want to be able to take money, by check or credit card into your online business, don’t forget PayPal
