Blogging For Bucks — Can Anyone Do This?

OK, I posed question in the title and I’ll give you the answer right off the bat  … Yes! Short post?  No but you really can make money on line without selling sleazy eBook products, gathering email address to spam and acting like a college kid on an insult rampage … which sadly sums up what a lot of bloggers and Internet marketers act like these days. One of the biggest reasons I decided to take this direction in the Retired Pay world blog [...] Continue Reading…

FERS Retirement Ballpark

Many queries I’ve received over the past years of this blogs existence revolve around making a ballpark estimate of how much a Federal Annuitant “retiree”) will get at some point in the future when s/he retires.  Some federal income streams are relatively easy to estimate, but the FERS (Federal Employee Retirement System) can be particularly complex.  O knew quite a bit about FERS but I learned considerably more today from an excellent article by John Elliott in Mike Causey’s July 16th Federal Report column. As we’ve [...] Continue Reading…

Sometimes You Don’t Need A JD To Understand The Law

LOS ANGELES, June 8 — A sobbing, shouting Paris Hilton was led from the courtroom Friday and ordered by a judge to return to jail to serve out the remainder of her 45-day sentence. “It’s not right,” yelled Hilton, rising from her seat at the defendant’s table. “Mom! You Mean All I Needed Was A Box Of Cigars?

Personally I have never lacked for evidence that I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but toddy’s example seems to really point this out.  Not that I really, seriously would have thought of bribing the judge in my divorce … or that I wish he would be sentenced to jail … well maybe for a few months *smile*. Here’s a guy who not only gives the whole legal profession and justice system a bad name, but sadly, points out the need [...] Continue Reading…

Make Sure This Doesn’t Happen To Your Mom

Somewhat scary article here about a senior whose still alive but has trouble convincing others that she is: Something a little different from my usual rant.  I think it’s important though.  This particular case … a 99 year-old widow made penniless because she didn’t “ask permission” to visit her son may seem a bit over the top, but it happens every day. If you or your mom (or dad) is dependent upon Social Security, VA Benefits or nay other government annuity, make darn sure [...] Continue Reading…

Choosing (or Sticking With) The Wrong Divorce Attorney

Not too many folks involved in divorce proceedings get royally screwed like the folks in this sad story did: NY: Divorce Judge On the Take Destroyed Lives & Families But we all need to be cognizant of the fact that court cases don’t always go according to plan.  That’s why I continually harp on the point that the money you will pay for a good attorney, an attorney who is a specialist in the particulars of your divorce will not actually cost you money, [...] Continue Reading…

Shabby Treatment

Here are some excerpts from a recent statement by Senator Carl Levin, (D), Michigan, as he opened a joint meeting of the Senate Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs Committees.  Now if you’re a died in the wool “Shrub” fan and feel our fearless leader can do no wrong and the Democrats will ruin the country, do me the favor, as a38 year military veteran, of just reading a little of what’s going on.  The is not a Republican vs democrat issue, it’s not a Liberal [...] Continue Reading…

A Decent CSRS On Line Calculator

In one respect calculating your retirement benefit is relatively simple.  You can, in theory, find everything you need on the Office of Personnel Management site: www.opm.gov But some other calculators are better organized, especially to take into account special circumstances such as law enforcement, firemen, etc.  I recommend this one for quick checks and retirement “what ifs”. http://www.fedcalc.com/servlet/com.quantos.fc2006.csrs RP’s advice for the day?  Retire as soon as practical … waiting seldom is worth the small gains … my only regret is I waited [...] Continue Reading…

What’s It All About — Alimony — And How Much Will You Spend?

A common definition of alimony is a specific amount of money ordered by a court to be paid by one spouse to the other. The payments can be limited in time or indefinite.  Traditionally, alimony was designed to be paid by the husband to the wife. in history, men were expected to support their families while women were the homemakers. Divorce Can Cost A Lot — Some Tips To Reduce The "Bite"

1. Have an Clear Written Fee Agreement Most experienced and effective divorce attorneys charge by the hour and require an advance retainer (or deposit) that is paid at the beginning of the case. Taxes During a Divorce

In Divorce, potential tax liability can frequently become the tool for one spouse to use against the other spouse. If improperly used, this tool can destroy all of the marital assets. In the worst case, tax liability can seriously impact the future financial security of either spouse and subject them to criminal sanctions. Just another reason I keep harping upon the fact you need a tax attorney, especially if you are getting divorced and especially if you are a Federal (CSRS or FERS) [...] Continue Reading…
